GLS: The Privilege of Leadership by Bill Hybles

·      Great leaders push though criticism.
·      Leaders love to build teams.  We need others!
·      Everyone wins when a leader gets better!
·      Luke 8 Parable of the Sower
o   The seed is the message of faith.
o   Some will reject it!  Keep sowing the seed.
o   There is a seed rejection ratio: 75%
o   Everyone’s life would be better if God is at the center.
o   I would like to see more trees next year!  More lives transformed!
o   If I want to see more trees I have to plant more seeds!
o   We have to sow more seeds!
·      We are running more experiments now at Willow than ever before!
·      Your whole organization takes its seed-sowing cue from its leader!
·      One of the fundamental qualities of a leader is to stay curious.
·      We need a non-stop series of experiments!
·      We need to continually tinker with our ministries!
·      Everyone wins when a leader gets better.  Lives are worth it!
·      Self-Leadership:  You are the most difficult person you will ever lead!
o   Work Habits of a Leader
§  How do I order my life to make the maximum amount of impact?
§  Your most important contribution is not your time but your energy!
§  What are the 6 inicatives that I need to energize!
§  6x6 these 6 things I need to invest in for the next 6 weeks!
§  I cannot sprint for 6 months but I can for 6 weeks!
§  I arranged my schedule by my 6x6 cards.
§  This kept me focused!
o   God made you a leader to move stuff ahead!  Not respond!
·      Succession Planning
o   There are a lot of mega-churches poised to transition.  The whole world is watching!
§  Planning Phase:  Who will write this plan? Who selects the successor?  Take your time in this phase.
§  Internal Search Phase:  Is there someone inside?
§  External Search Phase:  Do a complete external search.
§  Hand-Off Phase: 18 months gradual and slow hand-off.
§  Senior and Founding pastors have deep personal feelings for the church!
o   Senior Pastor’s make your last leadership work matter!
·      Leadership Movement!
o   First paint picture:  “We can’t stay here!”
o   Second paint picture: “We must go there!”
o   In the middle the vision is at risk!
·      What a Privilege it is to be able to lead something as important as the local church.
o   Not everyone on this planet gets to do this.
o   Thank you God that I get to be a leader.
